DR. VOGLER'S SPINAL TONIC — 75¢ a bottle. "Watch your little ones walk again! A spoonful a day keeps the ache away. Sold door to door, farm to farm, family to family."
No formula survives in company records. The label listed only "restorative compound, spinal salts, spring water."
In the early days, Our Great Founder had to take his spinal tonic door to door and sell it to poor farmers ailing from the horrible conditions in the Northeast during the Great Depression. The original tonic merely eased back pain.
The first recipient of the new formula of Dr. Vogler's Spinal Tonic.
"One of the first patients of Dr. Vogler's new Spinal Tonic. Louisa Moo Alcott had difficulty walking until she received three doses of the new formula. She was seen running around the farm the next day.' She died three days later and her body was sent to the meat factory to hide what happened."
Larry and what is believed to be his mother
"Pictured here is the boy who has come to be called Larry, who is believed to be the first documented case of Ladder's disease. Although the date is unknown, speculation places this photo at some date in the 1950s."
Three statements, transcribed by an intake nurse and kept in a private folder rather than the official chart. Names withheld at family request.
"Grandfather never asked why it worked. He only knew that it did. I have spent a year going back through what's left of the old formula and I think I finally understand what we were actually selling. It was never the tonic. The tonic was just the delivery."
"I know what the ladder is now. I am going to rebuild this company around it properly this time. No more guessing. No more spilled formula and hoping. We do it through the spine directly."
Ten years ago I believed the wires would set everyone free — that if enough of us stayed connected, freely, with no gatekeeper standing between one mind and the next, nothing could ever wall us back in. I watched them build the gates anyway. Every open line got a toll booth. Every free node got bought.
I don't think I was wrong. I think I was building in the wrong material.
Copper corrodes. Code gets rewritten by whoever owns the machine it runs on. The spine is the one network no one can buy the rights to.
Thirty-three rungs. My grandfather found seven families a week to feed. I can find thirty-three ways into every single one of them.
Mark: NEURONIC TRANSUBSTANTIATION. Class: medical and health services.
Description of use, as filed: "a proprietary method for restoring a patient's signal to its rightful place along the spine."
Filing includes a hand-drawn diagram, not reproduced here, of the cervical spine relabeled with seven numbered points and the notation "RUNGS, NOT VERTEBRAE" beside it, underlined twice.
you keep coming back to this page.
that's alright. so did the others. the ladder does not mind being looked at. it minds being ignored.
thirty-three rungs. seven you can feel. one you are standing on right now, whether you climbed here yourself or someone carried you.
